![]() In "Field of Dreams," Ray is given a chance to change all that. If Ray Kinsella had one regret, it was that he never was able to mend fences with his father before John Kinsella died. Ray and John Kinsella had a terribly stormy relationship through the years. I don't consider myself an overly sentimental guy, but watching this movie the other night, I couldn't help it: the tears streamed down my cheeks.Ĭostner stars as Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer who also lost his father before he was able to see his wife or granddaughter. "Field of Dreams" is a moving film about relationships. What does all this have to do with "Field of Dreams," the new movie starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta? Quite a bit, actually! He was stubborn I was stubborn.īut there is one thing I do regret: Dad never lived to see either one of his grandchildren. We had our arguments over the years, some of which could never be resolved. When he died, John Lewis Davis lived in Del City, and I lived in Tulsa. I still do.Īfter I went away to college and got married, there were weeks upon weeks my father and I didn't see each other or even talk on the phone. I was a bit rebellious and made a point to grow and keep my hair long. He went to the barber shop every Friday afternoon rain or shine. He was a career Air Force man who always wore a flattop. My son was born the following April.ĭad and I didn't always get along. Later, players from other teams appeared, and they got to start having games.MY father died in November of 1976. At the first sight of it, they cheered wildly like children, thrilled at their ability to play baseball again. ![]() Later, the eight White Sox players who were thrown out of the game appeared on the field. Ray hit some fly balls to “Shoeless” Joe, then he threw him some batting practice. It was one of a few times during the movie where we were reminded of the pure beauty and simplicity of the game of baseball. Played by Ray Liotta, “Shoeless” Joe gave one of what were several great monologues throughout the film, about how he missed baseball after being thrown out of the game for being part of the Black Sox Scandal of 1919. Then, one night, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson appeared. Ray meets Shoeless Joe for the first timeįor months, Ray waited for players to appear on the field, but nothing happened. ![]() I hope that reading this will inspire you to want to watch the film, either for the first time or once again. There are so many great scenes in this film, yet here I’ve chosen five to highlight. All the while, Ray has to battle losing his farm, as plowing under his corn is causing the farm to bleed money. Ray later hears another voice that prompts him to seek out reclusive author Terence Mann, who helps him to make the dreams of another former player come true. When he builds it, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and many other baseball players from years ago come back to life and play on his field. For those who haven’t seen it, the 1989 film stars Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer and baseball fanatic who hears a voice in his cornfield urging him to build a baseball field. Here we look back at five classic scenes and what they mean three decades later.įield of Dreams is one of my all-time favorite movies and a classic baseball film. Field of Dreams is one of the all-time great baseball movies.
